I am a second year graduate student in the field of communication studies at the University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign. I am currently working with Leanne Knobloch. My advisor is Peggy Miller.

Research

Broadly speaking, my  interests lie in the body of research known as "language and social interaction". More specifically, I am interested in topics relating to interpersonal communication, discourse analysis, and narrative. Some of the issues I am currently exploring  include the relationship between sexuality and 'life narratives', communication strategies utilized by romantic partners when they are uncertain about their relationship, and various phenomena within Conversation Analysis in the tradition of Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson.

Teaching

In the fall 2008 semester, I will be teaching two undergraduate seminars on interviewing and professional development. If you are a student in one of my sections, click on 'Teaching' in the left hand column to find relevant course materials.

Background

I am originally from metro-Detroit, Michigan. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in philosophy. I have research experience in a variety of areas including corpus linguistics (with John Swales), sexualities (with Kristin Scherrer), and social psychology (at the UM Institute for Social Research). I have also interned at the Society for College and University Planning, a medium sized non-profit in Ann Arbor, for two years in their department of communications and publications (here and here are examples of the many projects I worked on). For fun, I enjoy book clubs, working out, and creating ceramic art on the potter's wheel.
